Even for the most seasoned pro, a job interview can be a tense experience. So we want to make sure you have the information you need to be at your best.
Most importantly, we want you to know that Black & Veatch is committed to an inclusive working environment, beginning with a bias-free hiring process. We interview and evaluate each candidate using the same questions, presented in the same structured manner. That way you know our process is fair, and we know that at the end of it, we’ll make an offer to the most qualified candidate based on the requirements of the position.
Second, we want you to have a clear idea of what we’re looking for in an interview, and what you can do to best prepare.
We want you to…
Be your authentic self
So much of what we do, we do as a collaborative effort; be your true self, and let’s get to know each other.
Share your story
We already have your resume; we want to hear about your experiences, successes, and challenges, both professional and personal.
Be bold
Don’t hesitate to tell us what you can bring to our team. We’d love to hear your ideas.
Ask questions
An interview should be a conversation; bring questions, ask away, and let’s find out if we're a good fit.

Do your researchSpend some time online learning about our different business units, what we offer our clients, and what sets us apart. This is a good time to start noting any questions you may have for us. |
Test your connectionVerify you have a good internet connection, and consider removing other devices from your network during the interview. |
|
Review the job descriptionTake a minute to review the job posting, and note any past experiences, projects, or challenges you feel make you uniquely qualified for the role. |
Familiarize yourself with the platformWe typically use MS Teams for virtual meetings. Take a look at this video for information on how to join an MS Teams meeting. |
|
Plan your arrivalAny mapping app should find us easily, but make sure you have the right address, know the best route, and account for traffic. We strongly recommend you plan to arrive about 15 minutes before your scheduled interview time. |
Limit distractionsPets, kids, construction… distractions and interruptions are the reality of virtual meetings. Controlling your environment as best you can will help the interview go smoothly. |
|
Show your bestThe number-one question we get about interviews is, “What should I wear?” We’re a business-casual environment, so use your good judgement; no jeans, no athletic wear. |
It’s this simple: we want you to succeed. So whether you’re interviewing in-person or virtually, our HR team will be in contact with you at every stage of the hiring process. We’ll make sure you have a clear understanding of next steps, that you know the status of your application, and that you have what you need to be successful. Learn more about our hiring process.
