Flexible and Reliable Substation Solutions
The grid must evolve to support today’s shifting energy demands. Substations are at the forefront of that evolution, and the time for utilities to act is now.
At Black & Veatch, we’ve been leading substation innovation since the 1940s. From substation planning, configuration, siting and permitting to design, construction, and commissioning, leverage our experience and skillsets to meet your goals today and into the future.
Explore Our Substation Capabilities
We can conceptualize, plan, site, design, procure and construct any air-insulated substation configuration in the industry today, including current communication and smart grid technology. Our experience serving as engineer and as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor allows us to anticipate challenges and propose technically sound and economically viable alternatives. We also offer expertise in related facilities such as static VAR compensator (SVC), capacitor bank and high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems.
Because of the large size of some new air-insulated substations, our creative GIS solutions often provide the best alternative when considering the environment, cost and aesthetics. Our seasoned professionals specialize in GIS design and construction and blending facilities into the surrounding locale.
As legacy substation infrastructure reaches end of life, power demands shift, and advanced technologies emerge, opportunities have never been more ever-present for utilities to innovate. Leverage our design and construction experience and knowledge of the latest technologies to increase cost savings, achieve efficiency gains and reach sustainability goals through substation upgrade and retrofit solutions.
Intelligent automation technology gives utilities better monitoring and control, while ensuring efficient and reliable transmission and distribution networks. Black & Veatch can design and deploy the latest technology for substation automation and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) for more efficient, secure and intelligent systems.
A substation is a critical component of data center grid connection. It allows power from the local utility to be interconnected as a power source. However, with the huge demand for renewable power integration into the electric grid, the waiting list is a long one, and data centers can often be built long before the utility will be able to build infrastructure to power them. The solution? Building a substation owned by the data center. Learn more.

Project Example
Hopatcong 500kV Switching Station Project
Black & Veatch was selected by PSE&G to provide engineering, procurement, and construction services for the Hopatcong 500kV GIS project. The project was part of the Susquehanna-Roseland Reliability Project, which included the construction of a new 500kV transmission line, along with multiple substation upgrade projects.

Emerging Trends in Digital Substations
With technology at the forefront of our society, continuous improvements are being made to streamline and modernize the electrical grid from generating facilities to interconnecting substations. As technology continues to improve and become more widely accessible and available, staying up-to-date with the latest developments, practices, and standards is critical. We review the latest Digital Substation trends, including: IEC61850 enhanced protection schemes, instrument transformers on the IEC61850 process bus and high reliability networks with parallel redundancy protocol.

Mohawk Valley EDGE Substation
Mohawk Valley EDGE (Economic Development Growth Enterprises Corporation) hired Black & Veatch to provide engineering services on a 1.3-mile transmission line that would link National Grid’s Edic Road substation with the new substation built by the Fort Schuyler Management Corporation. Upon completion, MV Edge hired Black & Veatch directly, this time to perform the preliminary and detailed design for the new 115kV substation. Impressed with the company’s ability to execute, Mohawk Valley EDGE hired Black & Veatch one more time – this time to serve as procurement manager for major equipment and balance-of-plant.
