Drawing on more than 40 years of experience in power generation development in Indonesia, Black & Veatch will oversee the scheduling, design, quality control of equipment supplied, and construction activity for the 1,000 megawatt (MW) Cirebon 2 Project just east of the City of Cirebon in West Java, Indonesia.
Black & Veatch has been appointed as the Owner’s Engineer by P.T. Cirebon Energi Prasarana to help deliver an operationally efficient and much needed coal power plant on time.
“We are playing a critical role in helping the Owner prepare the project for construction and are focusing on overseeing the contractors’ performance as well as the quality of equipment supplied."
Tariq Aziz, Director, South Asia, Power Generation Services, Black & Veatch
Our role includes review of the engineering design documents, carrying out shop inspections in person and monitoring the delivery of key components throughout the supply chain,” said Tariq Aziz, Director, South Asia, Power Generation Services, Black & Veatch.
The expansion of the existing facility with a 1,000 MW coal-fired ultra-supercritical (USC) unit will serve as a key base-load generation asset for Indonesia’s power grid as part of the government’s 35,000 MW expansion plan.
The Owner’s consortium consists of Marubeni Corporation (Marubeni), PT. Indika Energy Tbk (Indika), Samtan Co., Ltd. (Samtan), Korea Midland Power Co., Ltd. (KOMIPO), and JERA Co., Inc.
Black & Veatch has extensive Owner’s Engineer experience on power generation plants throughout the world providing project management, programmatic quality assurance and quality control, knowledge and skills transfer and other engineering services. Black & Veatch is also an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor in Indonesia and globally, having served as the Prime Contractor on many projects throughout the world, including in Southeast Asia.
Editor’s Notes:
- Black & Veatch employs more than 100 professionals in Indonesia and has tripled the size of its local staff in less than two years.
- Since 1969, Black & Veatch has undertaken nearly 100 energy and water projects across 24 provinces throughout Indonesia. In power generation alone, the company has contributed almost 15,000 megawatts (MW) of installed capacity throughout the country.
- Black & Veatch is also serving as the Owner’s Engineer at the Banten Independent Power Producer (IPP) Power Project and contributed to the project’s recognition as the 2013 Asia Pacific Power Deal of the Year by Project Finance International.
- Ultra-supercritical (USC) coal-fired technology requires less coal per megawatt-hour compared to conventional coal combustion, leading to lower emissions (including carbon dioxide and mercury), higher operating efficiency and lower fuel costs per megawatt generated.
