‘Industry Driving Social Impact’ Award Recognizes Black & Veatch For Commitment to Engineering a Better Future

American Society of Mechanical Engineers and Engineering for Change award honors dedication to social impact efforts

Recognizing the intensifying global risks from rising urbanization, population growth and climate change, Black & Veatch is working relentlessly to solve humanity’s critical infrastructure challenges. In recognition of these efforts to facilitate global change, Black & Veatch has been awarded the “Industry Driving Social Impact Award” by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and Engineering for Change.

The honor, given to the company during the fourth annual Impact.Engineered event, cited Black & Veatch’s efforts to achieve the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Impact.Engineering jury specifically referenced the company’s efforts to deliver the Escondida Water Supply project, one of the largest, most complex desalination infrastructure projects in South America; its work in enabling hydrogen as a critical component of global decarbonization; and its push to innovatewith and develop microgrids, which promise new levels of resilience, reliability and sustainability.

“Achieving the U.N.’s Sustainable Development Goals requires support from organizations that understand and value the potential of technology-based solutions,” states the Impact.Engineering website. Bestowed each year during the Impact.Engineering event, the Industry Driving Social Impact Award “celebrates the dedication and progressive agenda of companies committed to engineering a better future through their contributions to social impact.”

“As an infrastructure company, we have a responsibility and privilege to contribute to sustainable development, reinforcing our commitment to the betterment of society,” said Brian Sifton, sustainability manager with Black & Veatch. “Today more than ever, we have an opportunity to truly drive social impact and change.”

“Through their contributions to the work of Engineering Change Lab – USA, Black & Veatch has demonstrated their commitment to elevating the contributions of the engineering community in addressing the challenges that the world faces in the 21st century through sustainability, stewardship of technology and entrepreneurship,” said Michael McMeekin, executive director of the Engineering Change Lab, who nominated the company for the award.

“By pairing innovation with technological advances likeadvanced water treatment, hydrogen, vehicle electrification, carbon capture and energy storage, we are actively helping the world achieve many of the U.N. SDGs,” Sifton said. “This includes helping secure our water future, working to support affordable and clean energy, and helping cities and communities become more sustainable. Our greatest opportunity to contribute is truly through the work we do for our clients around the world.”
