Black & Veatch Continues to Grow its Wind Energy Business, Announces New Leadership

Addition of renewable energy expert further positions the business for growth and investment

Growing client demand for tailored energy solutions that balance conventional and renewable generation sources reflect the power industry’s growing use of wind power as a key part of a more balanced power generation mix. To meet these evolving needs, Black & Veatch, a leading provider of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) solutions, today announces that it has named Mark Winstead as Senior Vice President and Director of Wind Energy within its Global Renewable Energy (GRE) business.

Backed by three decades of experience in project management and execution for the power market, Winstead joins Black & Veatch’s GRE team during a time of increased focus on the integration of utility-scale wind power as the market pursues cleaner, more efficient renewable energy solutions that offer new levels of reliability and resilience.

“Utilities and developers are increasingly looking for partners who can provide wind power solutions that will help them meet their sustainability goals and energy needs, while also addressing many of today's emerging challenges and opportunities,” said Mario Azar, President of Black & Veatch’ global power business. “Adding Mark’s insight and expertise helps ensure that Black & Veatch remains well-positioned to provide the full range of innovative wind power solutions, allowing us to continue to serve an ever-evolving market.”

Winstead brings a strong industry perspective and deep experience in setting strategic direction, managing growth, environmental engineering and fixed-price remediation. For the past 15 years, he has spearheaded renewable energy projects, both in construction and EPC, comprising more than 3 gigawatts of wind on more than 50 projects. Prior to joining Black & Veatch, Winstead served in leadership roles where he was involved in growth and development of onshore, offshore and wind repowering efforts.

Editor’s Notes:

  • In April 2019, Black & Veatch was selected to provide EPC services on a new onshore wind facility for Capital Power’s Cardinal Point Wind Project, a new 150-megawatt onshore wind facility located in Illinois.
  • Black & Veatch also played a key role in Deepwater Wind’s Block Island Wind Farm project, the first offshore wind farm in the U.S. The company designed the 25 miles of 34.5-kV undersea and underground cable that connected the 30MW, five-turbine wind farm to the mainland power grid for the first time. The project won ENR’s Best Project award in 2017.
  • In 2019, Engineering News-Record (ENR) ranked Black & Veatch as the No. 2 top design firm in Power, second in solar power, and fifth in transmission and distribution in its “Top 500 Design Firms” Sourcebook, reflecting the company’s leadership in serving the power sector.
