Black & Veatch selected as EPC contractor for air quality control project in Alaska

Retrofit will reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (26 June 2014) – Golden Valley Electric Association (GVEA) selected Black & Veatch Construction, Inc., the union construction subsidiary of Black & Veatch, as the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for its $90 million Healy power plant air quality control (AQC) upgrade project. The upgrade will enable GVEA to continue operation of Unit 1 and re-start the now dormant Unit 2.

“Customer rates have fluctuated with the oil market during the last several years,” said Lynn Thompson, Vice President of Power Supply with GVEA. “Restarting Healy Unit 2 will provide us with greater fuel diversity and help stabilize rates for our customers.”

Black & Veatch will add a selective non-catalytic (SNCR) system to Unit 1 of the facility and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system to Unit 2 to meet environmental requirements for nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions. The company will also assist GVEA in re-starting Unit 2, which has not run since 1999.

“This is an exciting project to be a part of because of the unique challenges it presents in terms of location and scope of work,” said Mark Chapin, Black & Veatch Project Manager. “We will assist GVEA in restarting the facilities then retrofit the operating units with the necessary AQC upgrades.”

Project completion is scheduled for 2017.
