Global Water Awards spotlight project aimed at improving water system resilience in California

Recognition for Black & Veatch-designed treatment facility validates reuse strategies

The Silicon Valley Advanced Water Purification Center, a recycled water treatment facility designed and supported by Black & Veatch, has been named the 2015 Water Reuse Project of the Year at the Global Water Awards. The honor was announced at the recent Global Water Summit in Athens, Greece.

Located in northern California, the project was designed to raise the resilience of the region’s water supply. It uses microfiltration, reverse osmosis and ultraviolet disinfection to produce highly purified water. The final treated product is then blended with an existing recycled water supply produced at the neighboring San Jose-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility to achieve the quality targeted for reuse in the community.

The Global Water Awards annually recognize innovation in the water and wastewater sector. The project was honored for its innovative blending of recycled water supplies to enhance quality and expand usage. That water will be used for crop irrigation, watering golf courses and parks and for industrial uses. It is the largest advanced water purification plant in Northern California and the first of its kind in the San Francisco Bay Area.

“Reuse strategies like those being used in the Silicon Valley facility are critical at a time when drought is testing the resilience of water systems across vast portions of the United States,” said Cindy Wallis-Lage, president of Black & Veatch’s water business.

“Being recognized at the Global Water Summit validates the important role reuse plays in addressing the water supply challenges many utilities face.”

Black & Veatch partnered with the Santa Clara Valley Water District and the City of San Jose, California. The project was completed in 2014.
