PSEG Power Selects Black & Veatch to lead Sewaren 7 Combined-Cycle Project

New 540-MW combined-cycle facility to produce high-efficiency natural gas power for PJM Market

Black & Veatch has been selected to perform engineering, procurement services and construction management (EpCM) for PSEG Power’s 540 MW Sewaren 7 combined-cycle project. The new dual-fuel gas turbine project is being developed to deliver power to the PJM market in time for the summer of 2018. Construction will begin in 2016 at PSEG’s existing power station site in Woodbridge, New Jersey.

The more than $600 million facility will feature GE’s high efficiency H-Class combustion turbine and deliver greater resilience and flexibility through dual-fuel capability. The project was finalized after clearing the PJM Reliability Pricing Model Base Residual Auction in August 2015. The auction was a critical step in ensuring its ability to dispatch power in New Jersey and the broader PJM transmission area.

“Sewaren 7 represents an important investment by PSEG in New Jersey’s power landscape,” said Rich Lopriore, president of PSEG Fossil. “Under PJM’s new capacity performance standards, it’s more important than ever to provide a high level of reliability.”

Dual-fuel capability allows the plant operator to generate power using ultra-low sulfur distillate (ULSD) fuel oil in the event of a gas supply shortfall. With more gas-fired generation being developed in the northeast, fuel security and reliability has been a major focus in PJM’s capacity market planning.

“Black & Veatch is a global leader in bringing advanced combined-cycle power projects online.”

Dean Oskvig, President of Black & Veatch’s energy business.

“Given the demands of the PJM market, schedule and execution are critical to the success of this project. When completed, Sewaren 7 will serve as a highly efficient, reliable power source within PJM, the nation’s largest wholesale energy market.”
