Battery energy storage will play a meaningful role in the future of wind generation with hybrid solutions helping to increase renewable energy production and efficiency. With over 10 years of experience working on utility scale energy storage projects we've accumulated expertise in technologies from lithium-ion and flow to long duration, flywheel, ultra-capacitor and thermal technologies. Additionally, we have experience designing both AC and DC-coupled storage solutions in order to improve efficiency and economics.

Black & Veatch has been consulting on marine energy since 1976 and worked on tidal energy since the early 1990s. We’ve worked on over 150 tidal and wave power projects helping investors, project and technology developers, utilities, and government agencies take potential projects from concepts to commercial reality. We support OEMs and project developers with studies, FEED and detailed design. We were the lead consultant on the Marine Energy Challenge (MEC, 2004-2006) and were also the lead technical consultant for Strand A (early stage technologies) of the Marine Energy Accelerator (MEA, 2007-2011), both for Carbon Trust. Between 2009 and 2012 we undertook most of the Technical Services Team work for the Marine Renewable Proving Fund (MRPF), through Carbon Trust on behalf of DECC, and authored the majority of the final report dealing with lessons learnt from this landmark project. We have more recently been engaged in providing similar technical services to DECC’s MEAD and Scottish Government’s MRCF schemes. This level of involvement on most significant UK projects in the past 15 years is unique and brings unrivalled understanding and insight into the complex issues facing the sector.

We work with many of the major utilities in the United States, and know their standards and preferences. This, combined with our experience with overhead and underground lines across all voltages, GIS, HVDC, and our self-perform or subcontract construction solutions, allows us to deliver a seamless renewable integration project.

Offshore Wind - Industry Overview, Challenges and Lessons Learned

Offshore wind has now become a mature commercial sector and is growing exponentially in many markets. The World Bank recently reported a technical potential of 15.6 TW of offshore wind power. This would be based on operations at a capacity factor of 50% and would satisfy half of the world's energy needs. As the world recovers from the economic impacts of the COVID-19 crisis, the "new normal" cannot be business as usual with respect to carbon emissions. Given its commercial viability and ability to be deployed at scale, offshore wind power will play a meaningful role in delivering the recovery from the current crisis.
