Engineering with Nature to Bring Communities Together
The fresh water in the lake sparkles in the sunlight. It’s stocked for fishing and rimmed by trails, gathering spaces, and native wetland plants. Inconspicuously, it’s also ready to receive and store excess stormwater. Planned and designed by Black & Veatch, the stormwater lagoon at Fontenelle Park in northeast Omaha is natural infrastructure and an invaluable piece of the city’s strategy to protect Missouri River water quality and enhance the community park.

Echo Park Lake Rehabilitation
Restoring the Sparkle to a Los Angeles Jewel
Echo Park has been a part of Los Angeles history for more than 150 years. Echo Park Lake, however, had become a collection point for pollution and was impaired by algae and other contaminants. Proposition O in the City of Los Angeles provided the funding for a major rehabilitation of Echo Park Lake.
Black & Veatch was selected by the city to conduct the design of the rehabilitation project. One of the major goals of the project was to meet the water quality objectives established by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board.

Electric Resiliency to Hurricane-Affected Puerto Rico School
Days became weeks, then months of darkness at the tiny SU Manuel Ortiz school after Hurricane Maria in September 2017 obliterated Puerto Rico’s already fragile power grid and set in motion the longest outage in U.S. history. That anguish lingered for nearly a year until power from the island’s problematic grid finally surged again.
The school won’t ever have to fret again about losing the lights, courtesy of Black & Veatch who donated tens of thousands of dollars in technology along with the manpower that put in a new, solar-driven power source.

Adaptive Master Planning
Black & Veatch is working with the City of Winter Haven – ‘The Chain of Lakes City’ – on its integrated and holistic One Water Master Plan. Recognizing the importance of water to social and economic fabric of the city, the plan establishes actionable strategies, including land use policies, develops project concepts with funding plans, and establishes the basis for resilient and sustainable water resource management over a 50-year planning horizon.
Chicago Stormwater
Envisioning a Dynamic and Equitable Future for the City of Chicago
Working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the City of Chicago and the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago, Black & Veatch continues to contribute to advancement and realization of multiple mega projects to deliver resilience to the Cook County and City of Chicago.
A proposed deep tunnel along with regional sewer improvements are viable solutions to provide relief to large scale flooding and basement backups occurring in nearly 20 percent of City’s service area in Chicago’s South Side and Far South neighborhoods. The Department of Water Management has completed hydrologic and hydraulic modeling, feasibility studies and preliminary engineering of the proposed project.
City of West Hollywood, CA
Fast-Moving Smart City Solutions
Guided by their smart city plan, City of West Hollywood, California, began to implement projects that would help them become a City of the Future. But like many communities, they were busy and needed support in the form of technical expertise to integrate multiple smart city technologies into the built environment. They proactively established a procurement pathway that gave them access to a bench of technical experts before they launched their smart city projects. Black & Veatch provided innovation, data, and design services and expertise to advance City of West Hollywood’s smart city projects, including electric vehicle (EV) charging.
