Black & Veatch Provides Technical Expertise for a Low-Emissions Natural Gas Plant in Thailand

Project Name
Glow Phase 5 Combined Cycle/Cogeneration Project
Location
Rayong, Thailand
Client
Glow Energy Public Company Limited

Black & Veatch, in a consortium with Marubeni Corporation of Japan, provided engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services to Glow Energy Public Company Ltd. for the completion of a combined cycle cogeneration plant near Rayong, Thailand. Named one of the world’s Top Gas-Fired Power Plants of 2012 by Power Magazine, the Glow Phase 5 project expanded Glow’s existing facilities.

Black & Veatch was the technical manager for the new facility, providing engineering, plant equipment procurement, construction management, startup and commissioning services. Black & Veatch was selected because of its in-depth technical and project execution expertise. Black & Veatch’s previous EPC experience and working relationship with Glow’s other units at this site, along with a commitment to execute the project from the company’s Bangkok office, were also key reasons for consideration.

Environmental Benefits

With an innovative design that increases steam output from 120 to 160 tons per hour, the plant addresses Glow’s need to generate more steam and less electricity when desired during operation. The plant delivers up to a nominal 382 megawatts (MW) of electricity when operating in full condensing mode, and 342 MW in cogeneration mode.

Glow Phase 5 is a low-emissions combustion turbine plant with the associated benefits of using natural gas fuel. Environmental benefits include reduced carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur dioxide, particulates and mercury emissions.

With this plant, Glow is now better positioned to help sustain energy assurance in Thailand by meeting the steam and electricity needs of its many industrial customers.
